Two Year Laters: Professional Teaching License, you are mine!!

Here we are in Montana for the summer. First year of teaching done! I was just reading the poem I wrote over two years ago now about looking for a job and here I am on the success side of that with a job in Charlotte waiting for me at the end of the summer and a job offer in Miles City, Montana. Teaching Fellows is in the past. I am recommended for my Professional 1 license! It was one of the hardest years of my life. I didn't take good enough care of Xavier, no sports this year. Not with lateral entry and first year teaching. Some part of me feels like a failure, with getting sick at the end of the year and with my boy not getting my full attention. I didn't take enough care of myself or him. I met some amazing people as part of the program, the best part of my year were the times I spent laughing with those guys, Adam Faircloth, Deondra Gladney, Myoshia, Tone,Josh. They were my safety net. Lots of options: Option 1: Back to Charlotte to Huntingtowne Farms for year two with a very difficult EC team relationship. Rodd put a full out bully in place as CF and that is what I keep thinking about when I think about returning. I miss my kids, but am also grieving and trying to take in what I've learned this year about the world in which my students live. I fought the achievement gap. I saw what poverty and minority status mean in American and particularly in the south. I miss those kids, who are beautiful and are the reward that keeps bringing me back day after day for 13 hour days. Option 2: Tommorrow I hear from Miles City, Montana who have offered me a job pending their board of trustees meeting tomorrow. Montana doesn't have reciprocal licensing and I would have to go back to school if I want to live here. I was thinking it would be good to be done with school for a bit and Miles City is way out there, a city of 9500 people in Eastern Montana. 5 hours from Helena, which is a hell of a lot better than a 5 day drive from Charlotte. But I would have a case load of 13 and my own resource room. There is a Williams kid there too.... :) Option 3: Go back to Charlotte but get all my stuff in for Colorado licensure and pursue jobs there. I had an interview for a job that I didn't get there this summer. Denver was my number one choice for Teaching Fellows and when I got waitlisted and then told there were no more positions there I went ahead to Charlotte. But my heart has been in Denver. It is close enough to Montana but not too close (if you know what I mean). It is cosmopolitan with lots of opportunities for Xavier. Close to the mountains and a healthier lifestyle. Uncle Jim and Aunt Cathy are there too, a big draw for me. Family, I miss my family, and I want Xavier to have strong male role models in his life.

Poetry

The world rapidly arranges and rearranges itself around my perch
in multi-purposed flight.
While
I
Alone
sit in single-minded pursuit
- TO PROVIDE -
in miniscule, quiet tasks
I build a nest of purpose;
sip mocha

Xavier's Year in Sports

Xavier had quite a year in sports. He tried out and made the Travel soccer team here in Amherst; they had an undefeated Fall and Indoor soccer season and then were moved up to the A division but still held their own in games. They found out how to deal with losing a game, a good lesson. We also got really crazy and decided to do Cal Ripken Baseball in Hadley, MA. They had a good season but it was definately a growing experience for Xavier who had to learn to focus and work had in a league that prides itself on its structured program. It was a good experience, I was amazed to watch Xavier in tryouts for tournament team and see the progress he has made in just a couple of months in the program. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we might make the tournament team. It is competitive getting in. We'll see. Xavier did make the A team for travel soccer for next year. He is very excited about that. I have become and expert at watching practice and games and juggling the sports schedules. It is actually one of the best parts of my week. I get to leave work behind, work on my tan, and hang out with some really great parents on the sidelines.

Trying to Figure out which Marathon to Run in the Fall

I am trying to decide which marathon to run in the fall.
Either Hartford,CT or Newport, RI

Running the NODM with My Brother

Wow it has been a long time since the last post and 95 pounds later plus a 10k and a mini tri, and a half marathon with my brother in Seattle I am finally starting to get close to my weight loss goal. 30 pounds to go give or take a bit.

Day 1: The Baseball Hall of Fame

We got up early so that we could spend some time at the baseball hall of fame in Cooperstown, NY. We loved the "Babe" Room.

Day 1: Hanging out with Sarah in Rochester, NY

We spent our first night with Sarah Marlowe in Rochester, NY. It was fun to hang out with Sarah again and Xavier enjoyed playing Wii.

Camping in Michigan

We had our first camping night in Michigan. We had a good night and lots of smores. The campground was still under construction so we were the only tent campers and had the pool to ourselves too. Rosie slept in the sleeping bag with Xavier all night long.

Wisconsin Dells Camping

We had a short day on Monday so that we could hang out at the water park in Wisconsin Dells. Xavier went down the big slide for the first time ever!

On the Bluffs above the Mississippi

We stopped for breakfast above the Mississippi in Minnesota. Xavier and Rosie got to ran and ran and ran.

Badlands Camp

It was rainy with tornado warnings so we spent our last night in a luxurious camping cabin. There were two bunkbeds and four spots to choose from for sleeping but boy and dog ended up in bed with me.

More Pics of Rosie

It's been awhile

Phew, its been awhile since last we posted. We have had many adventures and have added a new member to our family.
Rosie

The

Dog.

She is THE BEST DOG EVER and super cute as well. When we were filling out papers when we got her Xavier said something about "my dog" and then said, " My dog, I've been waiting to say that for 50 years!" We have been talking and planning for a couple years and we were glad to finally find the right doggy. She was born on Halloween so she is five months old now and counting. She rides around with me in a special bag for dogs. As soon as she sees us putting on our shoes she gets crazy trying to get into the bag to go along with us. She also has become a licking alarm clock for Xavier in the morning. A very effective means of waking a sleepy boy expecially when there is a little ear nibbling thrown in between licks. She likes to play fetch with her tennis ball and a game called escape to mamma that Xavier taught her. She is part Lhasa Apso and part Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She is a Lhasalier

Xavier and Football

I bought Xavier a football last night. We played football for an hour when we got home. At bedtime he said he wanted to go out and play more football. He slept with his football. He crawled into my bed with his football lovingly cradled in his arms at 7 AM and woke me up to say he wanted to get up and go play football. So we did. Does this mean that my boy is going to be a football player?
